Words are everywhere, so it's very important that they're the right words... correctly spelt and correctly used.

You should never underestimate the impact of how people will see you and if this is via written words, accuracy matters. It's often the small details that matter the most.

Your written words will reflect on you or your company. While it's easy to dismiss a couple of small mistakes, any more might make your work seem shoddy and perhaps unprofessional, which in turn can reflect badly on the services or products that you offer. You never get a second chance to make a first impression!

The consequences of poorly written content can be limitless: a lost reader or client, potential embarrassment, misunderstanding or even legal action. People expect perfection and an error could suggest a lack of care or quality control.

It's notoriously difficult to check our own work. With text that's familiar, we're so used to seeing what's in front of us that any errors just refuse to stand out. Our eyes and brain know what they expect to find and don't pay attention to what's really there! So... the value of a professional proofreader should definitely not be underestimated. A second pair of eyes will spot your errors and that's where I come in as a freelance proofreader and editor!

I am a freelance proofreader and editor based near Chichester in West Sussex. Please see below for an outline of the proofreading and editing services that I offer.

Services

As a freelance proofreader and editor, I can assist you with the following:

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

Duplicated or missing words

Homophones (such as your, you're)

Typographical or word processing errors

Consistency (against a house style or otherwise)

Formatting and layout (font, font size and colour, line spacing, headings and subheadings, page numbering, chapter and clause numbering)

Using:

Microsoft Word (using track changes)

PDF (marking up any errors)

Manuscript (on paper using BSI marks)

Type of work

Any written content, whether offline or online, can be proofread, including:

articles, business literature, blogs, brochures, CVs, eBooks, guides (instructive or informative), journals, leaflets, manuscripts, marketing materials, newsletters, personal and corporate statements, press releases, product information, short stories, tenders, terms and conditions, training materials, websites.

If your content type is not listed above, please just ask.

Pricing

Pricing will depend on a few different factors:

the format of your text, the complexity and length of the text, the intervention that is required, whether any previous checks have been undertaken and of course, turnaround time.

It would be best if I can see the document in order to give you a free, no-obligation quote, so please email me with a copy or an extract of your text (including the overall word count). Please also give details of any images and captions, the target reader and purpose of the writing, and whether the text will be read by anyone not fluent in English.

Please note that the proofreading and editing services I offer do not involve significant amendments to the text in terms of its content and structure. Anything more than light editing is beyond the scope of my services and requires the input of a copy editor. I will of course be more than happy to flag up anything that catches my eye!

Reviews

"I asked Linda to review some articles for the Allsorts Motor Club newsletter. The amendments and suggestions that she made certainly improved the flow of the wording, and her turnaround speed was exceptional. I would definitely use her services again."

"After finishing my manuscript, I wondered whether I would need a proofreader – I had proofread it myself, hadn't I?  Still, it would be safer to get someone to check everything. I contacted Eye for Detail and was very glad I did! It turned out that there was a multitude of things that needed correcting, and Linda was able to spot mistakes all over the place. She returned to me a copy of the manuscript showing all the necessary corrections, as well as a 'clean' copy showing how it would look after all the changes had been made.

It is always essential to have a manuscript proofread, and for this I can definitely recommend Eye for Detail."
