Welcome toEye For Detail Proofreading

Professional non-fiction proofreading and editing services based in West Sussex

Do you need a fresh pair of eyes to review your written words?

We're all human and even the most careful of us can miss errors or inconsistencies in our work, potentially changing the meaning of words or interrupting the flow of our message.

When you've spent an age getting your words 'just so', the last thing that you want is to spot a mistake after they're published, submitted or visible online.

Reviewing our own work can be a risky business. It's a notoriously difficult task because with text that's familiar, we're so used to seeing what's in front of us that any errors just don't stand out.

At Eye For Detail Proofreading, I can help you eliminate any unnoticed slip-ups and polish your content so it's ready for your audience in just the right way. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so let's make your text ready for that first impression.

I'm a professional trained proofreader and editor based near Chichester in West Sussex specialising in non-fiction. When you work with me, what you'll get is the human touch with no AI. As your second pair of eyes, I'll work with you to make your words consistent, accurate and presentable so you can be confident your message hits the right spot.

Please see below for an outline of my proofreading and editing services.

Services

How can I help you?

As a professional proofreader and editor, I will be looking for:

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

Duplicated or missing words

Wrong word use (such as there, their, they're)

Typographical or word processing errors

Consistency (such as names, dates, capitalisation)

Duplicated or missing words

Wrongly placed or incorrect captions or annotations

Formatting and layout inconsistencies (font, font size and colour, line spacing, headings, pagination, chapter and clause numbering, headers/footers)

Any amendments, comments or suggestions will be marked up using:

Microsoft Word (track changes)

Adobe PDF (PDF comments)

If you have a style guide, I will happily adhere to this, but if not, I'll advise you on relevant style points to suit your content. I can also provide you with a comprehensive, bespoke style sheet setting out full details.

The level of my intervention is your choice. I'm happy to stick to traditional proofreading or I can proof-edit, which involves a light edit of your content. Please note that the proofreading and editing services I offer do not involve significant amendments to the text in terms of its content or structure, but I'm more than happy to flag up anything that catches my eye!

Content Types

What can I proofread?

Any written content, whether offline or online, can be proofread, including:

Whatever your content type, I can help to make your words deliver the right message.

Pricing

What will it cost?

Every job is different, so pricing will depend on a few different factors:

the format of your text, the complexity and length of the text, the intervention that is required, whether any previous checks have been undertaken and of course, turnaround time.

My hourly rate is £30, which is in line with the suggested minimum rates set by the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders. But, it's best if I can see your document in order to give you a bespoke, free, no-obligation estimate , so please email me a copy or an extract of your text (including your overall word count). Please also give details of any images and captions, the target reader and purpose of the writing, whether the text will be read by anyone not fluent in English and any other information you think will be useful.

What my clients say

"I asked Linda to review some articles for the Allsorts Motor Club newsletter. The amendments and suggestions that she made certainly improved the flow of the wording, and her turnaround speed was exceptional. I would definitely use her services again."

"After finishing my manuscript, I wondered whether I would need a proofreader – I had proofread it myself, hadn't I? Still, it would be safer to get someone to check everything. I contacted Eye for Detail and was very glad I did! It turned out that there was a multitude of things that needed correcting, and Linda was able to spot mistakes all over the place. She returned to me a copy of the manuscript showing all the necessary corrections, as well as a 'clean' copy showing how it would look after all the changes had been made.

It is always essential to have a manuscript proofread, and for this I can definitely recommend Eye for Detail."

- Richard France

"Linda is exceptionally good at what she does. She has recently reviewed the text of an historical document and associated poster, spotting quite a lot of issues. Adopting these will make a big difference to the image the Club portrays."
